Definitely off-genre from what you’re used to on welcomehohme.com, but Shoot the Freak doesn’t give a F*&k, so I don’t either. These guys are my favorite band in the city, hands down. I think I’ve probably seen them ten times in the last six months. In fact, the last time I saw them, it was with Hank & Cupcakes at Don Hill’s the last night it was open, EVER….it was the definition of awesome. Watch out world…this group’s hot…one I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot more of to come. Currently based in Brooklyn, hailing from Israel, the duo Hank and Cupcakes have been generating some serious attention for their sexy, upbeat pop music. MTV’s already complemented their ”fresh new sound” and Huffington Post has hailed them as one of the ”15 Musical Acts to Break in 2011.” Check out their new hit, appropriately titled; HIT, which they were lovely enough to clear for welcomeHOHME. Twin Shadow

I’ve had a bunch of friends point me in the direction of Twin Shadow (George Lewis Jr.) over the last six months and after a few listens, I couldn’t get enough of his hauntingly irresistible sounds. His debut album, Forget, which Lewis recorded and performed fully by himself, released at the end of September and immediately pushed him straight into the spotlight. Born in the Dominican Republic, raised in Florida, now living in Brooklyn, Twin Shadow has quite the future ahead of him, who’s already on a 20+ city tour in Europe as we speak. Definitely grab the entire album, but until then, enjoy these two tracks and check him out on his site or his Myspace.

The Five One

One of the things I’m noticing about WelcomeHohme is that the more I write, the more amazing music seems to find me. A perfect example is the the Five One, a fresh Pop/Rock/Hip-Hop group hailing from what they refer to as the DMV (DC, Maryland, & Virginia). Gold, the group’s bassist, hit me with a bunch of their tracks a couple months back and after all the holiday madness, I’m finally getting a chance to show them some love. They were recently featured on MTV2 for their track, Active and their sounds have been covered by the likes of MTVU, USA Today, the Washington Post and many more. Be on the look out as they’re currently planning a multi-city tour on their way to SXSW this March. Until then, enjoy their catchy sounds and if you really likes…head over to their Myspace and Site.

Hurts

Whoa. Funny how some groups can send you back in time even if the music is new. Case and point, Hurts. A new group out of the UK, they’re producing music that sends me back to when my dad was playing me Men Without Hats albums back when I was a kid. Future Vince

I was introduced to Julian Forte, founding member of Future Vince, about six months ago and got a chance to listen to some of his unmastered work. At the time, I was blown away by not only the technicality and precision of his music, but the production level coming from a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Fast forward to now, he just hit me up with his group Future Vince‘s new EP….and wow…these guys have radio-play written all over them. I hear a delightful mixture of Ben Folds and Pearl Jam with hints of Radiohead They characterize their music “as melodically and rhythmically complex while keeping in touch with its alternative roots. The band experiments with odd harmonic progressions and interesting time signatures to bring a new flavor to the pop-rock genre. Carefully thought out arrangements and measured allocation of individual member talent allows Future Vince to shine as an original group with an unmatched sound.” …don’t think I could’ve said it any better. Lucky for you New Yorkers, they’re playing their debut show the weekend after next, on Saturday the 4th at the UC Lounge in LES. Magic Punches

Magic Punches, out of Portland Oregon, just came out swinging with their new indie pop/rock EP, Brightly Colored Tapes. This being their first mastered work together, you’d think there’d be some obvious flaws but it literally sounds like they’ve been recording together for years. The group consists of Lee Barbara on vocals, guitar, keys, and drums, and Bobby Seus on vocals, bass, keys, and guitar. You can tell, not only by the production quality, but by the shear technical difficulty of their music that they both know what their doing. If the music isn’t impressive enough, they recorded the album themselves, in their own studio that they founded, Color Blocks Productions, all while recording various other Portland area music projects at the same time. BCT was mastered by Jeff Lipton of Peerless Mastering, out of Boston, MA. I would highly recommend you head over to their site where you can download the EP in it’s entirety. Watch out for these guys as I’m sure they’ve got much more to come.

Zambri

Recently I was lucky enough to be introduced by a friend to one of the members of Zambri, an up-and-coming Manhattan based group fronted by sisters, Jessica and Cristi Jo Zambri. After a few listens through of their new EP, Bang For Changes, I was addicted to their dark yet delightful sound. They’re getting great press these days and their songs are being remixed by a bunch of DJ’s and producers which usually means we’ll be seeing more live shows pop up from here on. Keep your eyes out for them as I wouldn’t be surprised to see them at festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo next year. Check them out on Facebook and some additional tracks on their Myspace.

Indubious

True consciousness is not something easily attained. It’s another thing to dedicate your life to it. Look past Indubious‘s obvious musical talent and you’ll find a story just as inspiring as their intentions. Quite clearly stated, their purpose is “to reconnect the people of the world with rightful living, rightful speaking through teaching the everlasting blessings of service to humanity, of service to our higher purpose and higher selves. Our gift is music – and through our music we wish to speak the truth in an effort to inspire others to do the same, to change the vibration of our planet and help others express the true loving nature within us all.” Damn. Where did Righteous Sound come from? These guys are doing it right and doing it well. Grassroots to the core, they’re selling out concerts left and right, developing a seriously passionate audience while they go. Artists like Indubious and their label brother Alcyon Massive are really putting southern Oregon on the map musically. Alcyon Massive

Alcyon Massive is a dynamic new artist on Righteous Sound Productions out of Southern Oregon. His debut album, Dreaming the World Awake is a seriously solid blend of hip-hop, reggae, and what he likes to refer to as tribalonika. Lyrics packed with positivity & soul-enlightenment mixed with clean & catchy production spell out a strong start for this fresh, new artist. In general, I’m not much of a praise-music connoisseur, but this is different. Non-denominational in it’s nature, Alcyon seeks only to bring attention to love, life, and positive energy…which I can get down with. I’m gonna leave you with this lyric from open your heart which struck a chord with me:

Xuman

Xuman is supa-dupa new. He’s only got three tracks on his Myspace but I’m loving his single Panic, which Binary hyped up a few weeks back. Out of Moscow, he might be one to watch. Not even sure if he’s released his first album/EP yet, nonetheless I’ll keep you posted, for now, enjoy, but don’t you panic.

Van She

Holy shit, Van She came out of nowhere with this one….gives me chills every time I listen to it (that’s how u know it’s good). Not really sure how, but some songs have serious physical effect on me…this is one of them. In fact, when recording Nowism, I was transitioning from Phonat’s Set me Free into this track and I damn near cried. F*ck, I love music. Serious props to Van She for this, glad I can spread the good vibes on. Check their site out here and Myspace here.

Julian Casablancas

You may have heard of this little band called The Strokes…but hey, if you’ve been living under a rock for the last 8 years, I can understand. Julian Casablancas, the lead singer/songwriter of The Strokes, has been putting out some solo content here and there and I love this new jam of his, the Tourist. Oh man, just found my “guilty pleasure” of 2009. They’re already big on Myspace, so not much I really need to write about them other than they give me serious nostalgia to my early college/emo obsessed years. My boy Sam-wise described them as a happy mixture of Postal Service and Something Corporate…I couldn’t agree more. Their album, Ocean Eyes, is super well produced with some of the catchiest, poppiest sounds I’ve heard in a while. I’m not sure whether all their songs just sound the same, or if they’re all awesome, because I seriously had a hard time rating any of them lower than a 4 star in iTunes…..this is bad, very bad…..but it’s so good….shit.

Florence & The Machine

Gypsy and The Cat

Their sound is clean and their melodies are intoxicating. Mix that with tremendously catchy lyrics and you’ve got Gypsy and The Cat. Yet another amazing group coming out of Australia, Victoria specifically. I don’t know what’s going on down under these days, but whatever it is, it’s good. Can’t wait to see these guys pump out more hits.
