I’m a little late on this one, but it’s never too late for one of Welcome Hohme’s favorites, NSR. If you’ve been in any club within the last 6 months, I’m sure you’ve heard Lloyd Banks track; Beamer, Benz, or Bentley. Well, as on-point as we’ve come to expect from NSR these days, he’s come up with a clever take on the track, this time paying homage to not only one of mine, but one of New York’s most beloved breakfast snacks; the Bagel. He’s named it Cream Cheese, Butter, Jelly and even shot a hilarious video to go along with it. Audio Oddity

Matthew Michael, also known as Audio Oddity’s been playing music in Southern Oregon for years now and he’s just starting to put some of his produced/sound engineered work out. Well, I’ll tell you what, he really stepped his game up for Amp Live’s Turn It Up remix contest. He’s due to release his first full-length EP entitled “Hiding in the Light” by January of 2011. HTL, in his words, will be “..a blend of both natural and electronic sounds designed to make you both move your feet and quench your soul.” Jump over to Amp Live’s site to vote for his remix, as he’s currently in the top 20 and the contest ends on the 22nd. One of the artists I’ve had the pleasure to see rise from zero to hero is Donnis. As consistent as ever, he’s back with his new mixtape, Fashionably Late. You can literally see how quickly he’s risen solely on the long list of familiar names featured within the new mixtape. Hosted by Dj Ill Will, Clinton Sparks, and DJ Rockstar, Fashionably Late features the likes of Estelle, Yelawolf, OJ Da Juiceman, Colin Munroe, and John Legend and is packed with a bunch of club bangers and familiar samples. And Found, my most recent mix to date, was downloaded over 2000x in it’s first week after release. The mix also qualified for the Pioneer DJ Network Competition on LetsMix.com. I managed to pack 75 artist into 77 minutes of, once again, the newest and best in House, Electro, Disco, Trance, and of course some filthy dubby Dubstep to close it out.

Welcome Hohme’s favorite anti-hero’s back letting me exclusively leak two new tracks from his upcoming EP High Tops & Hand Rolls. We all got a look at his track, Spliff, a few months back and fast forward to now, it’s one of my top read posts yet on the site. These two new tracks are bangers…not just because of the production quality but because of the high level of relatability his lyrics speak to the people in my age group (everyday 20-somethings). Theophilus London Pt. 1

I’m not sure if it’s Theophilus himself or his management, or whatever….but whoever’s behind this guy is smart. If you want a clear look into a near perfect model of what marketing should be in the current music industry, look no further than him. He dominates the blogs, he collaborates with the best producers and the hippest musicians, and focuses on the most important thing, live performances. Those of you who you know me, know my strong opinion about the music industry. My boy Loren Wohl, over at RCRDLBL, really hit it on the head in his post regarding Theopilus’s new free-for-download album, I Want You

“Theophilus works this [live performances, corporate endorsements, and licensing] to his advantage. Click over to his MySpace and you’ll see that he’s performing all over the world. Last October He teamed up with Mark Ronson and Sam Sparro to create Chauffeur, releasing a track to promote Ronson’s Gucci boat-sneaker. Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound put out “Humdrum Town” with a music video in January. I Want You is his 3rd mixtape, hyped to the max and stuffed with uncleared samples. That’s another cool thing, when you take money off of the table artists can express themselves without limits. Yes, this is still illegal, but would Whitney Houston really sue him over a track that didn’t have a proper release?
What can aspiring artists learn from him? Make music that’s different (and awesome, of course), give it away for free, wait for the right opportunities, and don’t stop making music.” -Loren Wahl

eRNEST&AMz are an up and coming French and American electro/hip-hop collaboration sure to make their mark on the scene relatively soon. The group’s made up of Ernest Saint Laurent, a producer/multi-instrumentalist out of Paris, and Amz, a vocalist/DJ/producer out of NY. Their new remix of Miike Snow’s Sylvia is a banger….check it out along with another new track of theirs, Coming Up. Head over to their Myspace for additional tracks and info.

Rusko

Rusko’s huge…if you know dubstep, his name is pretty much synonomous with the genre. He just released Da Cali Anthem, which is a BANGER, as it should be with a name like that. Mickey Factz

I’m not positive as to how I found Mickey Factz, but either way, it was meant to happen. I haven’t heard any of his earlier work, just his most recent mixtape titled Dark Phoenix #ALPHA, which I found to be as intellectually tactful as it was pleasantly surprising. He’s definitely got a story to tell, which you can interpret through his passionately syncopated rhyming over top of sampled tracks from Phoenix’s hit album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. It’s been pretty few and far between these days where I find Hip-Hop that I really like and this album got me on first listen. I definitely recommend you download it, not only because it’s free and awesome, but because thoughtful, witty music like this is what’s going evolve Hip-Hop in the right way.

Donnis

I wasn’t lying when I said to watch out for Donnis back in October last year. Since then, he’s locked down consistent radio play, a national tour, and not to mention, just recently signed with Atlantic Records. Like many others, I’m excited to see what he’s got in store for us now that the hustle’s well established. For now, check out this freestyle he just released….quotables for days….get wit it.

So, the weather’s been str8 crzy in NY as of late so I haven’t been doing much walking around, buuuut, in hopes that the sun will be shining soon I’m gonna share with you my current favorite “walking/skating around NY song”. Dan Black’s an awesome new indie artist and this song Symphonies feat. Kid Cudi gives me chills. Check out the video here, his Myspace here, and his site here. Dash Speaks

Dash Speaks has been a prominent player in New York underground hip-hop scene for a while now, releasing albums in 2005, 2006, 2007 and performing with the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi, Talib Kweli, Mickey Factz, Mike Posner, and Das Racist. Fast forward to current, he just released his new album titled Geography (which you can download for free here). After over a year of writing and production, Dash finally feels he’s created an album that is an extention of him as an artist, not just “some another rapper”…and I couldn’t agree more. Super fresh and original beats make for a great foundation to back up his clean, syncopated flows. Definitely cop the album here and head down to Gallery Bar at 10pm tonight for his album release party featuring MemoryLaine (NSR + Nickname) and TJ di Hitmaker.

Hly shiz, this guy is good. Got the heads up from my boy Garrett on this Colorado based guitarist/DJ/Producer and immediately was getting down to his complex and progressive beats. I loved his 11-track EP Before I Sing and just recently downloaded his 4 song preview of an upcoming dual-volume release called Beyond the Looking Glass and wow, this guy can produce. He does a fantastic job fusing “elements of hip hop and soul with modern rock guitar and dubstep textures.” I literally can not sit still while listening to Attunement…that, my friends, is what I call a beat. Stay tuned for the full-length release, but until then, download the 4 track preview and check his Myspace out for some more great stuff.

Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew

It wouldn’t surprise me if you’ve never heard of Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew, but head over to Sierra Leone and you’ll find a completely different story. There, they’ve released ten albums since 2000, are superstars, and pack stadiums with fans looking up to them as musical leaders of humanitarianism and social awareness. Currently they’re in NY working on a full-length LP slated to feature the well known hip-hop artists Talib Kweli, ?uestlove, and Black Thought. The album will be released off Modiba Productions, a humble label featuring “..the best and hottest in new Afrocentric music to drive positive social and political change.” The Huffington Post describes their sound as having the “floor shaking rhythm of dance hall with the social consciousness of Fela Kuti, a combination that’s creating a craze around their name.” Uh, ok, watch out for these guys. MC Yogi

Having recently started attending yoga regularly, I was reminded of an artist my boy Samwise referred me to named MC Yogi back in the summer. When I heard his fresh blend of hip-hop and spiritual chanting for the first time, I was immediately addicted. He grew up on Hip-Hop, but at 18 began studying meditation, yoga, and devotional chanting. Now, he rocks shows and owns a yoga studio in Point Reyes, Ca. Check out his site, Myspace, and definitely grab his album Elephant Power. This is now music.

James Kinney

Thanks to a tip from the homie NSR, I ventured down to Ella this last Thursday to catch a set by an R&B artist out of Austin, Texas named James Kinney. Having never heard his music before, I was happily surprised to walk into a packed room full of people bouncing to his soulful sounds. With a voice that I’d loosely relate to the style of John Legond, backed up with a clearly talented group of musicians, you can tell James is no novice when it comes to live performance. He’s currently working on an unreleased album titled Masterpieces of Simplicity, which I was lucky enough to get an advanced look at. If you’re in the NY area within the next couple of months, check out his Myspace for upcoming performances, including a weekly Thursday residency at Ella on Houston & A. Memory Laine

NSR already came out swinging with his LP, The Darling Limited, which, if you haven’t heard yet, is 100% worth the download. Now, he’s back, joined by fellow MC, Nickname. Together, they just dropped their joint project, Memory Laine, with a six track album, called The Spotlight EP. As expected, the lyrics are just as engaging as the production is clean. Considering how much quality content has come out of NSR within a short period of time, we can assume he, Nickname, and his producers mean business. Eliot Lipp is a beat-smith. When I found Beamrider, I had just finished burning all the copies of my 2008 christmas mix. If I’d found it a week earlier, it would have definitely been on there. Such a dope airy synth, and with that infectious bass line, ahh, this track’s a banger.
