So I know that I already featured his track, Night Air on the HOHME Hundred, but still I can’t stress how good Jamie Woon is. If any album deserves a double post, it’s his debut, Mirrorwriting, which released on the 18th of last month. Upon first listen, it was immediately one of my new favorites. It was insanely difficult for me to even pick four favorites, but I finally decided on Street, Lady Luck, Shoulda, & TMRW; all of which give me chills on first listen. Future Vince

I was introduced to Julian Forte, founding member of Future Vince, about six months ago and got a chance to listen to some of his unmastered work. At the time, I was blown away by not only the technicality and precision of his music, but the production level coming from a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Fast forward to now, he just hit me up with his group Future Vince‘s new EP….and wow…these guys have radio-play written all over them. I hear a delightful mixture of Ben Folds and Pearl Jam with hints of Radiohead They characterize their music “as melodically and rhythmically complex while keeping in touch with its alternative roots. The band experiments with odd harmonic progressions and interesting time signatures to bring a new flavor to the pop-rock genre. Carefully thought out arrangements and measured allocation of individual member talent allows Future Vince to shine as an original group with an unmatched sound.” …don’t think I could’ve said it any better. Lucky for you New Yorkers, they’re playing their debut show the weekend after next, on Saturday the 4th at the UC Lounge in LES. Sharaya Mikael

I’m a sucker for beautiful music. Case and point: Sharaya Mikael. When her delightfully tranquil voice meets with the clean, yet tactful melodies of her band, it seems to consistently pull me in and instill this general sense of serenity. I love that; when a group can immediately transport you to a completely different place from when you started listening. If you like these two tracks, you should 100% grab her EP, Far Field, over at Reverb Nation. Keep your eyes out for Sharaya on her Myspace and Facebook as she’s currently on a 50-state tour.

Zambri

Recently I was lucky enough to be introduced by a friend to one of the members of Zambri, an up-and-coming Manhattan based group fronted by sisters, Jessica and Cristi Jo Zambri. After a few listens through of their new EP, Bang For Changes, I was addicted to their dark yet delightful sound. They’re getting great press these days and their songs are being remixed by a bunch of DJ’s and producers which usually means we’ll be seeing more live shows pop up from here on. Keep your eyes out for them as I wouldn’t be surprised to see them at festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo next year. Check them out on Facebook and some additional tracks on their Myspace.

Avett Brothers

Every once in a while you find a song that parallels you’re life so close that it blows you away…I had just moved to Brooklyn when I was recommended this song and needless to say, my emotional reaction to hearing this song the first time was quite strong. This song just screams closure…the lyrics spoke somewhat of a nostalgic confidence for me at the time, accepting that it’s not always easy to embrace the closure of a relationship yet instills confidence that although the road ahead is uncertain, there’s quiet confidence in the decision to move on. Either way, that’s just my personal response to it, nonetheless, it’s a great song. Enjoy. Oh an check the Avett Brothers out here and here.

Laura Jansen

Laura Jansen‘s a Dutch musician based in Los Angeles who first established herself when she became a regular at the Hotel Cafe, and esteemed LA music venue. Now, she’s quite famous out in the Netherlands. She’s toured with two other artists I’ve written about previously, William Fitzsimmons and Joshua Radin and her music, as expected, is just as, if not more beautiful and tranquil than theirs. The Bird and the Bee

I was introduced to the bird and the bee about a year back by the boy DRVA. I liked their album, Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future, but no where as much as I like their cover album, Interpreting the Masters: Vol. 1. The group puts a new age/electronic feel to Hall & Oates’ classic hits. Here’s two for you to enjoy, check them out here and here, and go gets this album…it’s worth it.

James Yuill

I love the ambient and gentle nature of James Yuill‘s music. Almost Postal Service sounding, I can enjoy his music just as much in my headphones as I can as background music while I write. James is a one-man band. taking the stage solely with his laptop, mixers, microphone, and acoustic guitar. Check him out on his site and his Myspace.

Frankmusik

I’d downloaded a few remixes of Frankmusik‘s work over the last year and didn’t look much further into it, but thanks to a recent tip from my sister, I’ve checked out his original work, and it’s really good. I’m currently having problems keeping his track Complete Me off repeat. Seriously, I’m risking a total play-out here, but I can’t stop, it’s too good. Check him out here and here.

Joshua Radin

When I put Joshua Radin on my favorite songs of 2007 mix, I had no idea he’d get as popular as he is now. Only 2 years later and I’ve heard his work on countless TV shows and commercials. Felix Laband

Felix Laband was one of the many artists I picked up on while I was backpacking in Nepal. This South African producer, off critically acclaimed label, African Dope Records, brings new meaning to the word perfectionist. His sound is the definition of clean and crisp, presenting noises that play with your head and thoughts in a beautiful way. In fact, put your headphones on and close your eyes when you listen to it….the sound will paint pictures in your mind. The story I got from the guy who showed me his work characterized him as somewhat of a recluse, where, even if you went to one of his live shows, you’d never know if he’d play a whole set, play 10 min and get over it, or even show up at all. With that kind of sound, you can understand where he spends most of his time. Check out his Myspace here.

Low Motion Disco

I don’t know much about Low Motion Disco, but I seriously love this re-work of The Five Stairsteps classic seventies hit, Ooh Child. They decided to title their version “Things are gonna get easier” which I find instills a true calmness inside of me every time I listen to it. So child….chill out, things are gonna get easier. Cool?

Elsiane

Serious props to my boy Patatat for this recommendation which immediately became one of my favorite artists. An incredibly unique voice mixed with beautifully ambient melodies and beats, Elsiane, out of Montreal Canada obviously knows what they’re doing. Made up of Elsianne Caplette and Stephane Sotto, their debut album, Hybrid, is wonderful. I was introduced to them right before I went backpacking in Nepal and India, so needless to say, they were a staple in the soundtrack to my travels. Also, I can thank Elsiane for introducing me to Morgan Page, who played a set after them in an intimate little industry show I saw in LA about a year ago. Check them out here & here.

Kings Of Convenience

This is bold, I know, but Kings of Convenience are my favorite musical group. I’m sure there’s a lot of nostalgia involved with that decision, but no matter, their sound is amazing, warm, catchy, melodic, soothing, and every other positive music-based adjective I can think of. They dominate my “most played” list on iTunes and easily have the most 5-star rated tracks out of any other artists I’ve ever listened to. Their music is situation appropriate for damn near anything, in my mind. There are countless songs I could post of theirs, but considering this site is dedicated to what’s new, I figured I’d press up a couple songs off their new album, Declaration of Dependence, which is therealdopeness.com, as expected. Their songs are jam-packed with wise, life-based quotables, no different in their new track, Freedom and It’s Owner. This one gives me chills: “Freedom, freedom never greater than its owner, Freedom is the mastery of the known, Freedom, freedom never greater than its owner, No view is wider than the eye.”

Alan Wilkis

Straight outta my current home, Brooklyn, Alan Wilkis is producing some great sounds. I just happened to come across this track, the hustle, when watching some random fixed gear video shared by my boy @hchanda. Had no idea who it was and I liked it so much that I ripped it off the video. Later on, I heard another track from Alan and drew the connection. I love how tactfully he adds elements to this song. Hopefully I’ll get to see this guy live sometime.

A gentle, beautiful voice out of this one. Only nineteen years old, Lucy Schwartz is fresh new singer/songwriter out of Los Angeles. The beautiful vocal harmonies accompanied by delicate melodies on the piano make this song for me. Hope you enjoy

Lovin this relaxing joint by Fink, remixed by the Cinematic Orchestra. Both artists are based in the UK. As I write this, the rain’s pouring outside and this song’s creating the perfect ambiance. It’s almost as if it were written to enjoy while sitting on the couch with a blanket and hot chocolate.
